Reflection in a Dead Diamond, Hélène Cattet & Bruno Forzani, 2025, 87m
When the mysterious woman in the room next door disappears, a debonair 70-year-old ex-spy living in a luxury hotel on the Côte d’Azur is confronted by the demons and darlings of a lurid past in which moviemaking, memories and madness collide.
Cattet & Forzani’s films are marked by their startling intensification of Pop and Graphic art tendencies in ‘60s and ‘70s film and art: whether drawing on giallo for 2009’s Amer or poliziotteschi films for 2017’s Let the Corpses Tan. (Though they would probably bristle at this over-simplification.) Reflection in a Dead Diamond reflects the imagery of ‘60s Bond adjacent spy thrillers like Danger: Diabolik! (Bava 1968) into a mise-en-abyme mirror of psychedelic loops, voyeuristic memory, and the logic of graphic matches.
